Events of the project Export knowledge - Import art

On 15 April 2011 we conducted two workshops:

At 10:00 Kaval Making Workshop:
Kaval is a wooden shepherd flute with eight holes, one of the oldest instruments in Europe, rich in tone and technical possibilities. Macedonian kavals are typically made of a single piece of ash wood, which is very hardwood. But we used bamboo, which is also hardwood and it is good to hollow it out.

First we had to find right measure

Than we had to drill hole into the bamboo stick

Instructions from older member of KUD Romi Berovo

We did not get any tone out of it, but our mentors played it beautifully.

Tapan Playing Workshop at 14:00 was led by Nehru Demirovski and assistant Djafer Destanovski, who teached participants to play basic rhythms on this traditional wooden drum. Tapan is used as an accompanying instrument, especially in combination with zurla.
